Funding Sources

The Prairie Pothole Joint Venture facilitates its activities through a variety of sources, including an annual budget appropriated through the US Fish and Wildlife Service by Congress, general partner funding , special initiatives by Management Board representatives through their respective organization or agency budgets, and other programs such as State Wildlife Grants, where goals and objectives of prairie conservation are also linked to the PPJV Goals and Objectives.

However, the North American Wetlands Conservation Act of 1989 (NAWCA)is one of the most critical sources of funding available to the PPJV. With NAWCA's requirement for partnership and matching funds, the PPJV is able to broaden its partnership base with both large and small grant funding to protect, restore and enhance the prairie landscape.

To date under the NAWCA program, the PPJV has totaled 114 projects (90 large grants/24 small grants) for a total of $228,772,593 (NAWCA and partner match) and has protected, restored or enhanced over 1.3 million acres in the joint venture.

Another source of potential funding (1 project funded to date) is the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act. As this funding source grows, the PPJV will look to the Neotropical Act for partnerships that will help address many of the data needs for shorebirds, waterbirds
and landbirds in the PPJV. A major challenge for the PPJV is to find non-federal matching funds. We are always interested in talking with organizations that may share the goals of the PPJV and wish to participate in programs that partner to protect, restore and enhance wetlands and grasslands in the prairies.
